  1. Flexible Pavements 

These pavements are surfaced with asphalt or bituminous materials. The reason why this is called flexible is because the structure of the pavement “deflects” or “bends” because of the traffic load. In this kind of pavement structure, several layers of materials are used to accommodate the flexing. This is a popular pavement as reflected on the statistics that 94% of the paved roads in the United States are comprised of flexible pavements.  

  1. Rigid Pavements 

Rigid pavements are surfaced with PCC or Portland cement concrete. They are termed as rigid because their structure is stiffer than the flexible pavements. The materials of PPC have high stiffness. Only 2% of the paved roads in the United States are comprised of rigid pavements.  

Concrete Pavements 

One of the common materials used for pavements is concrete. The concrete can be modified in different ways to suit the requirements of the locality. Pavements made of concrete are durable, strong and affordable. It’s cost worthy because it can withstand severe weather conditions. The types of concrete pavements are jointed unreinforced, jointed reinforced and continuously reinforced.  

The unreinforced concrete pavement is composed of slab layers connected by tie bars to prevent the material from cracking. The detail of joint layout is important so the pavement’s construction and design is successful. The success of the pavement also depends on the flexural capacity and tensile strength of the concrete.  

The size of the panels or concrete pieces also depends on the shrinkage strain. The shrinkage strain may cause cracks in the concrete, unless the tensile strength of the concrete is greater than the stress caused by the shrinkage strain.  

The jointed reinforced concrete pavement on the other hand is a developed or modified version of the first type of concrete pavement. If differential settlement and doubt regarding the materials are anticipated, reinforced pavement is used. The thickness is thinner compare to the unreinforced pavement and the join spacing is also larger. The length of slab used can reach up to 20m.  

This pavement can be designed as cracked slabs or crack free slabs. Installing steel bar in the middle of the pavement is important since it balances the negative and positive moments equally. This will result to flexing prior to cracking. This pavement is built where there’s an expected huge loads.  

The third type, which is continuously reinforced concrete pavements, uses reinforcement bars at the middle of the slab. Anchors are provided at the end so bumps and ripples won’t form at the beginning of the bituminous materials. The operation of this pavement is also influenced by cracks spacing. Usually, this kind of pavement is used for the construction of highway projects and airfield runways.
